Karen is mostly standalone houses on large plots, often on borehole water with storage tanks and long buried service runs between the tank, the house and the garden. That changes what goes wrong: leaks are more often underground and invisible than dramatic and indoor.
On large plots we use acoustic leak detection before digging. It costs less than excavating a garden to find a pipe by trial and error, and takes a morning instead of a week.
